Cuita

Pa amb tomàquet sequence

We propose a series of designs based on the ritual of preparing “pa amb tomàquet”, which is bread with tomato, a typical Catalan dish, and Mediterranean “ready-made” cuisine. Ready-made meaning that the ritual takes place at the dining table. The sequence consists of four steps: Choosing the tomato, Cutting the bread, Pouring the oil, Arranging the placemats. We have developed four handmade products made from traditional Mediterranean materials, such as reeds, beechwood, terracotta and cotton cloth.

The first object used in the ritual is a hanging container to store the tomatoes, it has a terracotta base and a woven reed cover that protects the tomatoes from fruit flies but allows them to breathe.

The second product is a bread basket where you can both cut and store the bread. It consists of a terracotta base that collects the crumbs, a wooden piece to cut the bread on, and a reed cover so that the bread doesn’t dry out.

The third product is a bottle that dispenses oil. It fits confortably in your hand when serving. It is made from glazed terracotta texturized by stamping woven reeds onto the wet clay before firing.

The fourth and final product is a collection of hexagonal placemats that fit together, inviting those sitting at the table to play at making different shapes. They are made of cotton cloth and rope to protect the table top from hot surfaces.
